My Holiday Favorite
For anyone who knows me, it's no secret how much I love to celebrate the Christmas holiday season. As we give honor recognizing the true meaning of Christmas as the day we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
With a kit, all you have to due is construct the house and decorate. With the kit, the cookies have been baked for you. You will need to dry the houses overnight before you can decorate them. The only thing I don’t like about the kit is the royal icing that is included with it. I prefer to make my ownroyal icing
because I can control its consistency.
Packaged and Ready to Go!
I used foam core board for the base of the house. It was 1” thick and able to hold the weight of the completed house. By the time you add all of that candy onto the house, if can get a little heavy. If you find yourself buying the kit, it already comes with its own base for the house to sit on.
It will take 24 hours to dry , so you must count this time in, too. It took me about three days to put together these houses here. I saved a day by using the pre-made gingerbread house kits.
Day 1 you can make the dough and then bake the dough. That is after you’ve cut your templates. Don’t forget that the gingerbread dough must rest in the refrigerator for at least an hour before rolling out.
The day you build the house can be the day you make the royal icing.
Royal icing is the ‘glue’ that holds the house together.
I hope you're inspired to build your own gingerbread hous and that the creative spirit sparks in you. Don't let the process intimidate you. Go on ahead and make the dough. You can even find gingerbread house templates online.
The gingerbread house is a wonderful holiday tradition. When you start out making your own dough, it really becomes a project. So, plan your time accordingly. Christmas is in three days, you better start now.
